Each RF Code M250 Reader possesses a default IP address, despite being set for DHCP out of the box. Although it's not likely you will need this IP address, it can be a life-saver in situations where you have no USB cable for configuration. The requirements are:
- A Reader still set to DHCP
- A computer which can be physically connected to the Reader's RJ-45 network port
- A network cable to connect the Reader to the computer
1. The default IP address (also known as a Zero Config IP - zcip), is printed on a label on the bottom of the M250 reader in the form of a "169.254.x.x" address.

2. After obtaining the IP of the Reader, make sure the computer you're connecting to is disconnected from all other networks and its physical network connection is configured for DHCP. Have the computer attempt to refresh its DHCP address (either by rebooting or disabling/enabling the NIC) and wait for it to time out and get its own zcip IP address. You can view the network status of your computer by typing "ipconfig" in a Windows command prompt ("cmd"). Generally, this interface will be known as the "Local Area Connection".
3. Now connect the Reader and computer using a network cable and power cycle the Reader.
4. After 2 minutes, you should be able to browse to the Reader addressing it by its default Zero Config IP address in a web browser, or connect to it using the Reader Configuration Utility (RCU).
